Class 1 HGV Driver (Wagon & Drag)
The Best Connection Oxford are looking for a Class 1 HGV Driver (Wagon & Drag) for our client based in Abingdon!
Salary: Starting at £17.00 per hour
Expected Hours: 45 hours per week + overtime opportunities at time and a half!
The Role
As a Class 1 driver, you will be responsible for driving their Wagon & Drag vehicles and working closely with the Trackway crew to install and recover mats across the UK. You will work in a two- or three-person team, often in remote locations, and will spend nights away in your truck (without sharing accommodation). This role involves both driving and hands-on work with heavy equipment, making it a dynamic and physically active role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Drive HGV Class 1 Wagon & Drag vehicles across the UK, ensuring safe and timely transport of equipment.
- Partner with the Trackway crew to install and recover mats at various locations.
- Operate heavy equipment (such as cranes) or be willing to train to do so.
- Ensure accurate completion of paperwork and electronic records.
- Assist with mat installation/removal and ensure readiness for transport.
- Adhere to all Health and Safety procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
- Work flexibly across day, night, and occasional weekend shifts.
- Travel nationwide and work away from home (Monday - Friday).
What We’re Looking For:
- Valid HGV Class 1 driving licence (essential).
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work effectively within a team.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment (crane) or willingness to undergo training.
- Knowledge of hand tools and their use.
- Strong adherence to Health and Safety regulations.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team.
- Reliable, punctual, and motivated with a strong work ethic.
- Willingness to travel nationwide and stay away from home during the week.
- Experience in construction or Transmission & Distribution (T&D) preferred.
- Ability to pass a criminal background check, motor vehicle record check, and drug/alcohol screenings.
- CSCS card desirable but not essential – full training provided.
