Working in the Heat

How to Stay Safe and Comfortable Working in the Heat

When the temperature rises, so do the challenges, especially for temporary workers in roles that involve physical activity, outdoor work, or warehouse environments. At The Best Connection, your safety and wellbeing are always a top priority, whatever the weather.

Here’s some practical advice to help you stay safe, cool, and comfortable while working through the heat.

  1. Stay Hydrated

One of the most effective ways to stay safe in hot conditions is to drink plenty of water. Dehydration can affect your energy levels, concentration, and health.

TBC Tip: If you’re on assignment through The Best Connection, check with your onsite representative or supervisor to locate the nearest water station or break area. Aim to drink water regularly throughout your shift, not just when you feel thirsty.

  1. Dress for the Conditions

Where uniform and PPE rules allow, wear light-coloured, breathable clothing that helps you stay cool. Avoid heavy fabrics and opt for layers you can remove as needed.

If you’re unsure what is appropriate for your role and environment, speak to your consultant at your local TBC branch. We’re always happy to advise.

  1. Make the Most of Your Breaks

Breaks are essential in hot weather. Use them to rest in a shaded or cooler area, rehydrate, and cool down.

We work closely with our clients to ensure all placements allow for appropriate rest breaks, especially during periods of high temperature. If you need support, don’t hesitate to speak with your local branch.

  1. Protect Yourself from the Sun
  • If your role involves working outdoors, take steps to protect yourself from harmful UV exposure:
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat or cap if permitted

Apply high-SPF suncream before your shift and reapply as needed

  1. Be Aware of Heat-Related Illness

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious risks in high temperatures. Watch out for signs such as:

  • Dizziness, headache or nausea
  • Muscle cramps or excessive sweating
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • A rapid pulse

If you or a colleague experience these symptoms, inform your supervisor immediately.

  1. Communicate with Your Branch

If you have concerns about your working conditions during hot weather, your first step should always be to reach out to your local branch. At The Best Connection, we’re here to listen, support, and take action when needed.

Our dedicated consultants maintain regular contact with both our workers and clients to help ensure safe and fair working environments.
