Worker Saves a Life
The Best Connection Worker Praised for Heroic Action
At The Best Connection, we are proud to share an incredible story of quick thinking and compassion demonstrated by two individuals, George Evans and Martin Harris, who are part of Lichfield District Council’s Street Scene team. Martin, a valued member of our Cannock temporary workforce, showcased the true spirit of selflessness during a critical moment.
Last month, while emptying a bin on Spinney Lane, Burntwood, George and Martin heard a faint call for help. They quickly located an elderly woman who had fallen and was bleeding heavily from a leg injury. Without hesitation, they sprang into action.
Using towels to stop the bleeding, George and Martin kept the woman calm while contacting emergency services. Martin also reached out to her family to provide updates on the situation. Their calm and decisive actions ensured the woman remained safe and supported until an ambulance arrived almost an hour later.
Reflecting on the incident, Martin said:
“I was in the Burntwood area carrying out some remedial work when I heard cries for help. It was an elderly lady who had fallen, cut her leg open, and was bleeding heavily. My colleague and I reacted quickly, calling an ambulance and following emergency service advice to assist until help arrived. The lady was taken to the hospital, where they discovered she had fractured her pelvis and broken her collarbone. I just did what any member of the public would do.”
The woman’s son, Mr. Woodward, later contacted Lichfield District Council’s Customer Services to express his deep gratitude. He praised George and Martin for going far beyond their duties, stating how much their care and support meant to him and his family during such a distressing time.
Sadly, the woman sustained serious injuries, including a broken leg, hip, and collarbone, requiring surgery and a transfer to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. Mr. Woodward has kept the council updated on her progress and continues to commend George and Martin for their outstanding efforts.
Chief Executive at Lichfield District Council, also expressed their admiration, stating:
“We convey our heartfelt thanks to both George and Martin. They have quite literally saved this lady’s life, and their actions fill me and the rest of the council with pride.”
At The Best Connection, we are incredibly proud of Martin for exemplifying the values we hold close – compassion, dedication, and the willingness to go above and beyond. This story is a powerful reminder of the impact that care and empathy can have on our communities. We extend our best wishes to the injured woman for a full recovery and thank Martin for his outstanding service.
