Building a Greener Future
Building the Skills We Need for a Greener, Healthier Future
Guest Blog by Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s UK Chief Executive
The state of the world at the start of 2026 causes many of us anxiety. From international conflicts and their economic aftershocks to runaway technology and toxic social media debates, the effect on our outlook and wellbeing is significant. This is often explained by a sense of powerlessness, a lack of agency and a feeling that our lives are being impacted by forces beyond our control.
There is of course a very real connection between global events and our own quality of life. Economic volatility pushes prices up and pushes more families into a cost of living crisis. Businesses find it difficult to invest meaning young people find it harder to get on the career ladder. Division online can spill over into division on our streets and in our communities. Changing weather patterns due to climate change mean more people are vulnerable to flooding or extreme heat, which impact first and worst on those who have least choice and least protection.
What doesn’t get reported so often is that against this backdrop millions of people are working tirelessly in their communities to combat these issues – protecting the most vulnerable and delivering projects, services and activities that bring joy into our lives. This is where you’ll find Groundwork, helping people take more control over the things that matter to them and demonstrating that, by working together, communities can be stronger and more resilient in the face of these seemingly overwhelming issues.
This is ultimately about system change, but it’s also an attitudinal shift – recognising the power of community action to address issues that may at first appear insurmountable. This can’t be done without partnership – combining public sector resources with the pride and passion that exist in the community and the energy, innovation and capacity provided by business.
This is how Groundwork and The Best Connection aim to collaborate, working together to unlock funds to enable more communities to access the skills and resources they need to make change happen and make it last.
We know from our experience that the best antidote to anxiety is action, and together we will deliver action to help people find good green jobs, to connect those people who need it most with nature and to bring people together to protect and improve their homes and communities.
With The Best Connection’s sector breadth, alongside Groundwork’s community expertise, we believe this partnership has the potential to make a real and lasting difference to people’s lives. We’re really looking forward to seeing how our partnership develops and the impact we can achieve together.
