8 Top Tips to bag that Job

When faced with lots of competition in the job market how can you stand out, in a good way, to make your interview memorable and above all successful?  Consider the following 8 top tips:

Tip 1.  Don’t leave anything to chance.  Do your research so that you know the company well and the requirements for the role you are applying for.  Find out who will be interviewing you and do some research on them as well.  Armed with some useful snippets of information you can impress people with your initiative and knowledge of the organisation you might be joining.  Tell them what they already know about themselves – it sounds crazy but it can be hugely powerful!

Tip 2. Look the part and act the part.  Interviews are as much a contest as they are about finding the right person for the job so play your cards right to win.  Looking good gives a visual and unconscious message about you.  Don’t leave anything open to criticism.

Tip 3. Sell, Sell, Sell.  It’s a bit of a cliché but you do generally only get one chance to make a first impression so you need to sell your suitability as hard as you can on that first important meeting.

Tip 4. Be clear about yourself, your aspirations and your capability.  People like to conduct interviews with confident candidates as it gives them confidence in their own decisions.

Tip 5. Don’t hide your light under a bushel!  Another old cliché but so true!  If you are good at something that may be relevant to the role, tell the interviewer about it.  It’s too late after the event.  Your achievements will tell things about you that you have probably never considered so don’t lose the opportunity to shine.

Tip 6. Do something different that people remember.  Consider preparing something on paper – perhaps a précis of your strengths – or what you will bring to the role.  Give it to your interviewer at the appropriate time.  Don’t wait to be asked - do everything in preparation.

Tip 7. If it’s appropriate – ask the interviewer if they have any concerns about you and the role that they haven’t mentioned.  If they share these with you it gives you the opportunity to clarify and overcome the objections.

Tip 8.  If there is a quick decision to be made on who gets to the shortlist or who is to offered the job, ask some blunt, to the point closing questions such as, are there any reasons why I shouldn’t be put forward for the shortlist/role, or are you in a position to offer me the opportunity?

Be confident and bold – and if you have done your background preparation you will be head and shoulders above the rest!

Good Luck!
